Creating Corpus-Based Teaching Materials
Creating Corpus-Based Teaching Materials: An Innovative Approach
Today, the rapid development of technology has paved the way for innovative approaches in the field of education. As a group of four, we have undertaken a project titled “Corpus-Based Teaching Material” in the Current Issues in Technology course at our university. This project aims to utilize language data so that students can use materials more effectively in the process of language learning and teaching.
Corpus is a dataset that contains a large amount of text data related to language use. In our project, we aimed to create educational materials using this data. These materials, which provide students with the opportunity to practice the natural use of language and its meaning, promise to be more interactive and up-to-date, unlike traditional textbooks.
I worked with Hüseyin Obut, Emir Batu Özdemir, and Emirhan Korkmaz for this project. In the design process, analyzing corpus data correctly and creating content that suits the needs of students was an important step. This stage began with shaping the educational material by considering factors such as grammar, vocabulary, and word frequency. However, we also encountered difficulties during this process. The correct selection and processing of data required great care to use the material effectively. Ensuring the diversity of texts made the process complicated at times.
As a result, we gained significant experience on how corpus-based materials can be used in education and the difficulties encountered in this process. We believe that such innovative projects will further advance the use of technology in education.
